Why this cupboard defeats everyone

Under-sink cupboards are the only storage in a house built around an obstacle. The waste pipe and trap run straight through the middle, the door opening is narrower than the space behind it, and there is usually a stopcock somewhere you must not block.

The result is predictable. Everything ends up in a single layer on the base, the tall bottles go at the back because they fit there, and you find things by kneeling down and moving the front row.

Use the height, not the floor

The space is not actually short of room. It is short of usable levels.

Look at what is under your sink now and you will mostly see air: a layer of bottles perhaps 25 cm tall in a cupboard that is 50 cm or more. Splitting that into two tiers is what turns one layer of clutter into two layers of storage in the same footprint.

That is all this unit does, but it does it around the pipe rather than pretending the pipe is not there.

Why sliding matters more than it sounds
